The Majestic Unicycle and the Noble Training Wheels

If you ask me, the art of being a third wheel gets an unfairly bad rap. What’s better than getting to hang out with your best friend AND their SO without anyone else there to distract you? Nothing, that’s what. Perhaps I am getting a little cocky because I myself happen to be an supremely great third wheel. It’s a beautiful thing sometimes–and it’s nothing to be ashamed of!

It all started as a joke. “We’re looking for a third.” Well, that is not happening. But then I just realized. I take the romantic photos, I support them both in the relationship, I listen to their problems, they listen to mine, and I just love the fact that they love one another. It is a pretty great thing to see two people in love. What is even better is that I love seeing my best friend in love with her future husband. So if you are like me and you find yourself in a “Third” situation, you’ve probably noticed these things.
  • You enjoy the CONCEPT of couples and relationships, but would personally rather be single yourself. That is...until the right person comes along. Then...DOUBLE DATES!
    • Third-wheeling gives you the best of both worlds!
  • PDA doesn’t bother you the way it used to.
    • "I like you. Let me borrow your face." It's something I hear a lot when I'm the third wheel, but its so stinkin cute. Obvi...coming from one person to the other in the relationship.
  • You know exactly how to time everything. (sexy time is totes a thing you have to keep in mind when being a third wheel)
  • You’ve third-wheeled in a multiplicity of different forms–in person, yes, but also texts, phonecalls.
    • This is the digital age, after all–you can’t just third wheel IRL.
  • You made sure people knew you were separate, though.
    • This third wheel flies alone
  • If someone asks you what your favorite romantic memory is, it usually involves the couple you third wheel most. It usually doesn't include yourself, but you were definitely there, though.
  • You’ve considered “professional third wheel” as your career choice when people ask you what you want to be when you grow up.
    • I could totes do that. Is that a thing?
  • You have often found yourself thinking that you didn’t choose the third wheel life–the third wheel life chose you.
    • But really, it did choose me this time.
The negative meaning behind being a third wheel has got to go. You can choose not to be a third wheel all the time, or you just embrace the fact that you are in fact the third. Or if you don't want the label of being the third...just call yourself the majestic unicycle and they are your noble training wheels! Yeah, I'm a strong independent unicycle who just likes being around my training wheels.
