My Opinion on the movie GOAT

So if you have been following my blog for sometime, you will notice that I am in fact an alumna of Greek Life at Wright State University. I am a very proud sister of Alpha Omicron Pi. Now, I will probably get some backlash for writing this article. But that is ok. I will state this. The opinions that I am writing are opinions of my own and should not reflect back on WSU or AOII. Just a little disclaimer in case some people do get offended.

First off, I would like to state the fact that current WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY GREEK LIFE DOES NOT HAZE! We are strongly against hazing. Members who are apart of Greek Life gain lifelong friendship with fellow members of other fraternal organizations. The bonds of friendship are strengthened throughout your college years and throughout life. Seriously, going greek was such a great experience for me. But obviously, some organizations haze. You've seen it in the news, you read it online. The point of this blog is clearly to promote how far Greek Life has come from events portrayed in the movie GOAT. If you have not viewed the the trailer, please do before you continue reading.

Soooo, GOAT. No. Not the Greatest Of All Time version, not the little guys you see at Youngs, but the new movie being released in September. The Cincinnati-shot movie is already making waves and it is not even out yet. Some want to see it. Some are highly against the movie. Some audience members even say the movie may shock a lot of people because of its a very realistic expose on hazing.

Hazing does happen but media portrays can really distort the image of what Greek Life is about and I am simply trying to acknowledge that.If you have never been apart of a chapter, you have NO IDEA how life changing it is. I wouldn't trade my experience for anything. I would also never want anyone to think that our Greek system is anywhere near what Brad Land's experience was 12 years ago because it simply is not like that at Wright State.

It's movies like Goat that changes the perceptions of students, parents, faculty, and anyone in between when it comes to organizations such as Greek Life. To be fair, this type of thing DOES happen on some, if not a considerable amount, of college campuses where Greek life is more of a dominant and elite social aspect of those campuses. But the fact of the matter is, hazing does exist. And, if you had gotten over the fact that hazing doesn't happen on your campus, you would have seen that this movie does not praise hazing in the slightest. It is a very raw, grotesque display of what some young men actually do relatively go through. Yes, most of the time Greek organizations do wonderful things. The exact chapters that haze can do wonderful things. But, if the Greek community wants to one day be bigger than the negative examples that are abundant across the country, it has to own up to the fact that these things DO happen and that they will continue to happen if it continues to play the victim of realistic portrayals.

So this is what I challenge you to do. Break the stereotypes. Speak up, speak out, and speak loud. Go see the movie. Because you judging the movie just by the trailer is being closed minded. Just like how people judge Greek Life just by what they hear. So share your Greek Life story. Give the realistic experience that you have with your chapter. Does hazing happen? Yea. Is this movie going to show a negative light on Greek life? Yes. Is it going to bring awareness about hazing? Yes. If anything, this movie is going to bring a spotlight to Brad Land and his story. It's tragic, but it's worth watching. It's a movie. This movie is going to bring so many people together that is in Greek life across the world. Why? Because we know the truth. Hazing exist in some places. now stand up and fight against it.
